    NEDAC: A worm countermeasure mechanism

    Get PDF
This article presents an Internet worm countermeasure mechanism that uses DNS activities as a behavioural technique to detect worm propagation. The mechanism also uses a data-link containment solution to block traffic from an infected host. The concept has been demonstrated using a developed prototype and tested in a virtualised network environment. An empirical analysis of network worm propagation has been conducted to test the capabilities of the developed countermeasure mechanism. The results show that the developed mechanism is sensitive in containing Internet worms. Keywords: Worm Detection, Malware, cyber defens

The existence of a smooth highway is needed to speed up the process of transporting people, goods and services and shortening the travel time. If the road is damaged, it will result in a decline in the economy in an area. In an effort to improve road performance, it is necessary to know the level of damage and the type of damage to the road. This study will discuss the existing conditions of Durian Anduonohu and Manunggal roads based on visual observations and analyzed using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) method, specifically for measuring vehicle speed, the moving car observer method is used. The final result of this research is the level of damage and type of road damage on Durian Anduonohu road, quite severe with a PCI value ranging from 30-67 with an average damage of 39% meaning bad conditions, with the equation from the regression analysis the following regression model results are obtained: Y = (1,390)*(0.056) x which means that there is an effect of the level of damage to the road on the speed of the vehicle at each additional PCI value. Analysis of the level of damage and types of damage to the Manunggal road segment with PCI values ranging from 41-55 with an average damage of 42%, which means that the road damage is in moderate condition (Fair), with the equation of the regression analysis the following Regression model results are: Y=(1.356))(0.044) x which means that there is an effect of the level of damage to the road on the speed of the vehicle at each additional PCI value. This research is expected to be a barometer of the Kendari city government or related agencies in trying to overcome or repair the two roads so that the flow of people, goods and services runs smoothly and the economy of the city of Kendari can continue to increase

The significance of co-curricular education in school

    Get PDF
Co-curriculum plays an important role in education. Among them is the importance of cultivating the personality and the formation of unity. Participation of students as young people and people in the country in co-curricular activities can cultivate positive values such as goodwill, unity, national integration and inculcating the values of the indirect and direct when participating in these activities. This is in line with the second core in the Education Development Master Plan (Pelan Induk Pembangunan Pendidikan), namely Developing Human Capital. Quality human capital is the nation's primary asset to determine the future of nation. It is also important in building the concept of "One Malaysia" which prioritizes unity among the multiracial Malaysians. There are various advantages and disadvantages of co-curriculum implementation in education. Therefore, the implementation should be carefully planned and implemented more seriously by all parties. Any constraints in implementation whether in terms of teacher training, equipment, infrastructure, support, finance, etc. are urgently needed. It is important that the co-curriculum implementation in education can achieve its objectives and succeed in producing a highly educated generation of noble and virtuous. © 2017 Elixi

    Get PDF
Abuse of antibiotics through self-treatment is of public health concern, especially in rural communities of low income countries. This study evaluates the prevalence of self-medication with five broad spectrum antibiotics (ampiclox, amoxillin, co-trimoxazole, metronidazole and tetracycline) commonly used to treat infections among non-health workers living in rural communities in Kano, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey of 300 randomly selected adult villagers was conducted with self-administered questionnaire. The prevalence of self-medication with at least one of the antibiotics was 70.3%. The most self-medicated antibiotic is ampiclox followed by tetracycline, amoxicillin, co-trimoxazole and metronidazole. Over 50% of the respondents purchased substandard antibiotics, which cost between $0.1-0.5 per dose from illegal drugs sellers in their communities. While only 29 respondents ever completed the dosage of the self-medicated antibiotics, about 22% took the antibiotics for 2 days and 41% took only 1 dose. A total of 154 (51.3%) self-used tetracycline and metronidazole for treating diarrhea, while 30.6% and 62% used ampiclox and amoxicillin to treat undiagnosed urinary tract infections and typhoid fever respectively. Only 33% have used antibiotics previously prescribed by health care workers, but the majority used them as a result of family and friends’ recommendations. Surprisingly, only 19 out of 300 believed that self-medication is a problem, but the majority (168) has contrary believe and 35 have no idea. Self-medication with five commonly used broad spectrum antibiotics is very high in rural communities and will require the development of a viable antibiotic stewardship programs to arrest the situation

Reducing the impacts of electric vehicle charging on power distribution transformers

    Get PDF
This article investigates the effects of high penetration levels of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging on power distribution transformers and proposes a new solution to minimize its negative impacts. There has been growing concern over Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions within the transportation sector, which accounts for about 23% of total energy-related carbon-dioxide emissions. The main solution to this problem is the electrification of vehicles. However, large scale integration of EVs into existing grid systems poses some challenges. One major challenge is the accelerated aging of expensive grid assets such as transformers. In this article, a demand response mechanism based on the thermal loading of transformers, is proposed. The proposed solution is modeled as an optimization problem, where a new time of use (ToU) tariff is used to shift the EV load considering the thermal loading of transformers, thereby minimizing their accelerated aging. The simulation results show that the accelerated aging of transformers can be reduced without augmenting the existing grid

The 8Li Calibration Source for the Sudbury Neutrino Obervatory

A calibration source employing 8Li (t_1/2 = 0.838s) has been developed for use with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). This source creates a spectrum of beta particles with an energy range similar to that of the SNO 8B solar neutrino signal. The source is used to test the SNO detector's energy response, position reconstruction and data reduction algorithms. The 8Li isotope is created using a deuterium-tritium neutron generator in conjunction with a 11B target, and is carried to a decay chamber using a gas/aerosol transport system. The decay chamber detects prompt alpha particles by gas scintillation in coincidence with the beta particles which exit through a thin stainless steel wall. A description is given of the production, transport, and tagging techniques along with a discussion of the performance and application of the source.Comment: 11 pages plus 9 figures, Sumbitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods

Phase change of iron ore reduction process using EFB as reducing agent at 900-1200°C

    Get PDF
Treatment of low grade iron ore involved reduction of oxygen in iron oxide by using reductant such as carbon monoxide or hydrogen gas. Presently, carboneous materials such as coke/coal are widely used as a source to provide reducing gas, but some problem arises from this material as the gas can harm the environments. Therefore, empty fruit bunch biomass from oil palm becomes an alternative to replace the usage of coke/coal as their major composition is carbon and hydrogen. The idea of replacing coke with biomass will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide release as biomass is a carbon neutral and renewable source, and at the same time abundance of waste from oil palm industries can be overcome. Therefore, the aim of this research is to upgrade the low grade iron with reducibility more than 50% being used in iron and steel making. In this research, low grade iron ore are mixed together with EFB then is making into composite pellet before being reduced at certain parameter chosen. The variables involved in this research is composition EFB (10%, 30% and 50%), temperature (1000°C, 1100°C and 1200°C) and reduction time is fixed with 30 minutes. From the experiment conducted, the highest reducibility achieved is 76.37% at temperature 1200°C. While XRD analysis shows the existence of metallic iron phase started to form at 1000°C with composition of 30% of EFB. Meanwhile, from magnetization test show that at 1200°C the highest magnetic susceptibility is achieved as the dominance phase at 1200°C is metallic phase. Therefore it is an interesting alternative to replace coke with biomass for reducing agent in upgrading low grade iron into workable ore

This paper focuses on the study of higher learning institution workers (academician, professional and management group and supporting staff) levels of understanding about Islam as a way of life, the concepts of worship and their level of understanding on the attributes of work as worshiping (‘Ibadat’) Allah applies to their workplace. It is timely to study about this topic since not many study focuses on this important issue. Study on workers generally occurs in a more generic perspectives about their behavior and work place and work productivity. The study uses pragmatism research philosophy and in this study only quantitative data used which was collected through an online using google online questionaire tools of facilities. All muslim staff (1751) were invited to be involved in this study and around 179 useful questionnaires were used for further analyzed. It can be concluded that research findings show that the majority of respondents in this study admit or agree that Islam is a way of life. This means they are aware that the teachings and guidelines contained in Islam can be applied in their daily lives. Based on the findings of this study, clearly respondents have a positive perception of the concept of worship. They realize that worship is a major demand in their lives whether in the world or hereafter. They also realize that this concept of worship can be applied in all aspects of their life. They reject the worship only for things related to prayer, zakat and fasting only. The findings as a whole show that respondents follow all the principles set out to make their work in the category of worship to God. This is in line with the views given by Al-Qaradawy (2013) and the views of some other Islamic intellectuals. Implications and recommendations of the research findings were also discussed in this paper

Effect of Hadron Dynamics on the Proton Lifetime

A detailed, quantitative re-examination of the effect of hadron dynamics on baryon decay, modeled in terms of Skyrme-field tunneling, indicates that any hadronic suppression should be quite mild. This appears to be another illustration of the `Cheshire-cat' phenomenon, that variation of the apportionment between description of the nucleon as a bag of quarks and description as a Skyrme field configuration has little influence on many nucleon properties. Perhaps the largest remaining uncertainty in evaluating the decay rate has to do with the overlap between a specified quark-antiquark configuration and a final meson state.Comment: minor corrections, 19 pages, 9 figure
